HISTORIC HOME PLANS
BUNGALOW HOUSE PLANS
The American bungalow home grew out of the Craftsman tradition. But where Craftsman houses have a specific and distinct style bungalow house plans may adopt the details and decorations of a number of different styles. The bungalow home is low, ground hugging, with a large, single gable roofline. Usually of one story, or with a second story contained within the attic, the bungalow home adopts the materials and styles of its surroundings. In the Southwest bungalow homes may be finished in stucco with Mission Style details. In the North-East they may be shingled, with river rock porch columns. They can even take on the trappings of Colonial Revival and Queen Anne decorations. But they always remain bungalow homes, designed for simple, economical living.

Heilman Villas - 1922

The Heilman Villas complex in Coronado, California, is a bungalow court in the Mission Style. It consists of a set of single story, detached bungalows, grouped around a common space. The complex also includes a 2-story building. This building was originally a duplex, each unit being 2 stories. Later it was remodeled into a community building. The set also includes site plans, elevations of building groups, a sheet with floor plan, elevations and details of an individual bungalow and a similar sheet for the duplex, both before and after its remodeling.

As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. These plans are ideal for a flat site. The bungalow plan has 1 bedroom, a large Living/Dining room, a kitchen and a bath. Each unit of the duplex originally had a Living/Dining room, kitchen and bedroom/bath on the first floor, with a large open room on the second floor. These designs are for an urban setting and could work well individually, as cottages, or as a cluster. The duplex has outside dimensions of approximately 22' x 52'. The individuals bungalow has outside dimensions of approximately 22'x24'.

SHIPPING: Your drawings are shipped to you, by US Postal Service, rolled, not folded, in a Priority Mail tube.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD: These plans are NOT complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL Bungalow Style home, not a pseudo-bungalow tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf.
