HISTORIC HOME PLANS
SOUTHERN STYLE HOME PLANS
Graceful porticos, balconies to catch the breezes, these create the ambience of southern style homes. Fresh air, shade from the southern sun, this is the atmosphere of southern plantation homes. A culture of formality, grace and hospitality expressed itself through plantation home plans and exists to this day in their grand colonnades. Plantation homes fuse the axial formality of classical/Palladian models with colonnades and balconies to catch prevailing breezes, in harmony with the climate.

Bagatelle Plantation - 1842

Bagatelle, a Greek revival jewel, was built in 1842 by the Tureaud-Bringier family. This illustrious family built several nearby plantation homes as well.

As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. This house offers a flexible floor plan for single story living, with the possibility of additional rooms in the attic. One adaptation of the plan could be as follows. The broad front porch leads to a traditional interior layout with central hall stretching from front to back of the house. This is not just a a hallway but it is also the main social space of the house. The main floor offers the possibility of 2 bedrooms, each with its own bath. There is room for 2 additional bedrooms and a bath in the attic. This house would be most suited for a flat or low sloping lot. It would be comfortable in a suburban or country setting. Including porches, this house has outside dimensions of approximately 54' x 68'

SHIPPING: Your drawings are shipped to you, by US Postal Service, rolled, not folded, in a Priority Mail tube.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD: These plans are NOT complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL Southern Style home, not a pseudo-southern tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf.
